Delamere Discovery

Delamere

Our cosy centre situated in the heart of Delamere Forest is the perfect place to enjoy the unique surroundings… by simply stepping outside the gate! You’ll be instantly immersed in habitats diverse enough in nature to actively engage children in curriculum linked and structured activities for a truly meaningful learning experience.

The Delamere Discovery programme encourages children to explore & thrive in natural surroundings. Children will discover and learn all about the wider environment that they share with the animals, plants, rivers and mosses of Delamere Forest. Whether you want this programme to support with the science or geography curriculum, we can tailor the activities to support your school’s goals. After a day full of exploring, children can relax, unwind and toast marshmallows on a bonfire on our grounds.

Desired Outcomes
  • Working together: Teamwork and collaborative activity is explored through games and problem solving tasks. An extension of this could recreate an explorers’ camp in a snake inhabited ‘rain forest’.
  • Mapwork skills: Using a pictorial representation of the centre’s grounds, pupils will learn how to recognise features from a key, and how to orientate a map and work out direction of travel.
  • Habitats: Whilst developing independent movement skills on various terrains, the habitats  and homes of animals from badgers to squirrels can be explored. A pond habitat could also be compared to a stream.
  • Stream studies: Pupils can use various sampling techniques such as kick sampling and pond dipping on centre grounds to discover and identify invertebrates in two contrasting environments. The streams can be further investigated for velocity, depth and physical features.
